Work on a £450,000 refurbishment of Town Hall Square – one of Reading’s key landmarks – began this week.

New paving, seating, streetlights and level access across the square all form part of the major improvement works, which is being funded as part of Reading Borough Council’s £20million Local Sustainable Transport Fund (LSTF).

Improvement works will include:

• Replacing all surfaces with high quality mid-grey concrete block to match those being used in the new Reading Station redevelopment.
• Creating level access across the square and the road to benefit disabled and partially sighted pedestrians
• The installation of new street furniture including bollards, bins, hanging basket fittings and seating, and new low energy streetlighting to light the area under the trees.
• Cleaning of the Queen Victoria Statue

The works – which had been delayed due to Thames Water carrying out major repairs to a collapsed sewer – began on Monday this week (July 22). They are expected to last 20 weeks, finishing in the first week of December. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times and access for delivery vehicles will be managed by the contractor as required.
