In 15 sites around Reading, Berkshire, 136 volunteers worked for a total of 448 hours picking up rubbish and clearing debris. In addition to the usual cans, bottles and wrappers, helpers also unearthed a decorative but rusty samurai sword, three lawn mowers, motor bike parts and shopping trolleys. Volunteers working with the Kennet and Avon Canal Trust pulled out a commercial sized bin from the water at County Lock.

35 students from the University of Reading joined Redlands GLOBE (Go Local on a Better Environment) and other groups to clear up their neighbourhood as part of the University’s Big Volunteering Weekend.
