Reading Bike Hire Scheme

Reading’s scheme would initially consist of 200 bicycles sited at around 30 locations from Caversham Centre to the railway station, throughout the town centre and out to the south and east into Wokingham Borough. Provision is made in the drafted contract to expand the scheme to more places within Reading, Wokingham and potentially West Berkshire.

Public bike hire is just one of a number of schemes being funded through the Council’s £20.7 million Local Sustainable Transport Fund (LSTF), which also includes a new pedestrian and cycle bridge over the Thames.

A report going to a meeting of the Council’s Policy Committee on September 23 outlines the progress being made in the procurement of public bicycle hire for Reading and seeks authority of the Committee to enter into a Contract with the successful bidder. At this stage, it is expected that the successful bidder will be announced in late September.
